On October 3 and 4, the 17th Japan Classical Martial Arts Exchange and Demonstration Festival was held at Kashima Jingu Shrine.
Since the very first gathering, this annual event has provided a truly valuable opportunity for practitioners of traditional Japanese martial arts to come together at Kashima Jingu Shrine, exchange techniques and knowledge across different schools, strengthen friendships, and dedicate martial arts demonstrations to the shrine.
These two days offer an exceptional opportunity to immerse ourselves in the practice, traditions, and spirit of classical Japanese martial arts.
On the first day, a technical exchange takes place at the Kashima Jingu Dojo, where participants have the rare opportunity to observe the techniques and demonstrations of other martial arts traditions at close range. Such experiences provide valuable insights that are difficult to gain through our regular training alone.
The gathering that follows allows us to engage in open and sincere discussions with teachers and practitioners from different schools, transcending the boundaries of our respective traditions. It also provides a meaningful opportunity to deepen communication and strengthen the bonds with our own students.
On the following day, we have the honor of offering our martial arts demonstrations before the sacred presence of Takemikazuchi-no-Okami, the revered deity of martial arts enshrined at Kashima Jingu Shrine. Through these demonstrations, we respectfully dedicate the fruits of our daily training and discipline.
Together, these experiences make the event profoundly meaningful, bringing together technical refinement, mutual understanding, friendship, and spiritual dedication—essential elements of the classical Japanese martial arts tradition.
This year, I was especially grateful for the opportunity to have in-depth conversations with Kobayashi Sensei and members of the Takumakai, as well as practitioners of Tendo-ryu.
We exchanged thoughts on our daily training methods, the various approaches and refinements developed through practice, and the principles and perspectives valued within our respective traditions.
The opportunity to share experiences, knowledge, and wisdom across different schools is something truly special and one of the greatest values of this gathering.
I was once again reminded of how meaningful and precious these exchanges are.
My heartfelt gratitude goes to everyone who made this wonderful event possible and to all those with whom we had the privilege of sharing these two memorable days.
